English - Cause and Effect Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

English - Cause and Effect - Essay Example The concepts of causes and effects have been applied in various disciplines such as philosophy and mathematics. The relationship between causes and effects can be of a reciprocating nature, where an event can lead to certain consequences, which can then lead to the previous event. On the other hand, same causes can lead to different effects, based on the environmental factors and the circumstances surrounding such occurrences. There are various rules that govern the relationships between causes and effects. For there to be a valid relationship between the two, causes must occur before the effects. This way, the effects must be a consequence of the occurrence of causes. The other rule governing this relationship is the fact that the causes must be bordering the effects, without any dividing factors in between them. Additionally, there must be a constant union existing in the causes and the effects, in a way that the causes can play to generate the effects (Gregory, 1992). Thus accordi ng to the rules of cause and effect relationship, any difference in the results must have been generated by a difference in the causative factors. This relationship can be based on what is the contributory factor to a certain problem. In this case, when an individual faces a serious problem, there is a need to seek what could be the real cause of that problem, just before embarking on seeking the solution to that problem. This is necessary because, if individuals do not seek the real cause of the problem they face, there is a likelihood of taking actions towards solving such problems, which in real sense might not help in eliminating the problems. Thus, in a life situation, the analysis of a cause effect relationship is necessary to help amicably solve the life challenges (David, 1975). The complete analysis of the causes of a problem ensures that an individual solves such a problem the first time. This is beneficial, other than tackling an issue when the actual relationship has not been well discovered, which may end up making an individual solve an issue halfway, only to revert to the same later, when the same problem re-occurs (Gregory, 1992). In understanding the relationship between cause and effect, then an individual needs to identify an issue at hand, consider all the factors that are involved or surrounding such an issue, which could have an impact on it, narrow down to the factors most related to that issue and finally pin point the actual factors involved. This way, the causative factors are indentified, which could have caused the situation at hand (Pearl, 2000). The cause-effect relationship has been widely applied in the religious front. This application has occurred in the form of religious doctrines upholding the viewpoint that for every action that, an individual commits, then there must be a corresponding effect. This way, in religion, any good deed will result to good results, while any bad one will give rise to bad implications on the part of the individual involved in the deeds (Pearl, 2000). Such doctrines upholds the viewpoint that the actions individuals do, either good or bad, will have an effect on such individuals, either in this life, or in the life after. More to this relationship, the religious doctrines provides for an explanation in the consideration of intent, rather than the actual act. Thus according to the religious doctrines, the intention of an individual, rather than the

Private Companies and Correctional Institutions Essay

Private Companies and Correctional Institutions - Essay Example This is not the case if things are handled in a proper manner when there is an all-out understanding that the private companies would follow the state’s dictum. The correctional institutions if set up under the realms of a private company, should be closely watched over by the state because this could mean problems of a magnanimous nature if the private companies prison individuals with which they have their own respective enmities and rifts. Having such jails would be tantamount to bringing in anarchic situations within the private companies and indeed the society at large, as there are problems that need to be understood before drafting in the correctional institutions (Cecil, 2010). What is even more significant is the fact that these correctional institutions should always be monitored regularly because this is the need of the hour. As far as the role of the private companies is concerned, the correctional institutions would always have to be bringing in the value for the sake of the society because the governmental believes in the same philosophy and it is only natural to think of it as such within the private companies. The private companies must comprehend that having correctional institutions is indeed a sensitive issue, and one that demands a great deal of vigilance and responsibility. The consequences of any weaknesses on the part of these private companies could have far reaching ramifications and the role of the top management within such private companies is one of essence. Administering such sensitive functions should only be carried about if the private companies believe in their strengths, and then only undertake such efforts to have correctional institutions within their fore. ... If these private companies believe that they can set up such correctional institutions and take care of the administration affairs at a later stage, this is asking for trouble. The state must not allow such private companies to undertake measures of correcting individuals who have committed a crime or have been labeled as offenders. The need is to carry out all the actions and tasks in a very honest way because the greater good of the society is at stake, and thus the private companies should always be certain that they will be at their best under such situations. What is even more interesting is the fact that the dangerous functions are understood properly by the private companies before these think of venturing into such domains. If they do not have any idea of the gravity of the tasks that they are getting into, it is in their best interest to keep away from the same, and concentrate on their core business areas. WWI and WWII Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

WWI and WWII - Essay Example A second cause of the First World War was the newly acquired military strength (arms race) of the European and the Asian nations. With no justified cause to test their military capabilities, the animosity in regard to the colonies came as a welcome relief. Significant alliances made prior to 1914 by strong hold countries in Europe also fueled the war. For instance, the Triple Entente in which France, Britain, and Russia agreed not to sign peace treaties separately. There is also the Triple alliance comprising of Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary. The commencement of the First World War saw the utilization of the legal obligations subject to these treaties. The need to prove political and military dominance stemmed from nationalism. For instance, Slavics in Bosnia and Herzegovina preferred to be part of Serbia. Their protest against Austria-Hungary’s domination of these two regions led to the final and presumably immediate trigger of this war, the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. The WW1 has similarity in causation with the First World War. Germany, in both instances, instigated the war with more valor than the other nations. In the case of the First World War, military prowess was the motivating factor. However, the Second World War was a case of wounded pride owing to the Treaty of Versailles. The policy of disarmament, which made them vulnerable to other countries attacks, also seemed unfair. Unlike the First World War, dialogue as a means of curbing war dominated the years before the Second World War. An example of a failed Dialogue is the Munich agreement (1938) which Hitler broke barely a year after enactment. The Failure of the League of Nations to foster peace as a result of military and monetary incapability also contributed to the Second World War. For the other nations such as Britain and France, nationalism as a cause was as eminent as in the

The typography used on the word helpline Essay Example for Free

The typography used on the word helpline Essay The font is the same throughout the ad but the size is different. The main question asked in the ad is what do you know about cocaine? This is put in a bigger font size in the whole ad and it goes through both pages to make it stand out. The colour of the font is white throughout the ad apart from the drugs Help-line, which is in yellow writing on a black background. This is because it is trying to make the number stand out at you in the dark. This could also symbolise the fact the most people take drugs in the dark or the colour black could symbolise death. The typography used on the word helpline has a question mark replacing the letter P. This is used to catch the readers attention if they are skim reading the ad and once the readers attention has been caught, the phone number is directly under the question mark. The telephone number is in a larger size font than the website. This is because the advertiser wants the reader to use the phone and explain their problems and have assistance with what they can do. If they made the website stand out most teenagers could go onto it but then think I have better things to do. However, they do want to have a website for people who may feel more comfortable going on the Internet, but the whole point of the ad is to advertise the Help-line. This ad is definitely aimed at teenagers or people who are in their early twenties. This is because the ad has got pictures of teenagers and what they think of drugs. There is a good chance that the teenagers who take drugs can relate to this ad because the opinions of the men in the advert are common opinions on what most teenagers think of the effects of drugs. You can also easily tell the ad is aimed for teenagers because the pictures are taken at a disco, the main place where teenagers go. Not only that but you can also see teenagers in the background drinking and dancing. The overall message of the ad is quite simple; dont take cocaine and if you  are not sure what the effects of them are, call the National Drugs Helpline and  who will tell you all the facts. The lifestyles that the ad seems to suggest  after you have cocaine this can cause you being scruffy, getting paranoid weeks after taking cocaine and you cant sleep hence the womens opinion of drugs in the ad. The message that the ad is trying to get across to the reader is dont believe what your friends say about drugs and find out the actual facts before you take them.

The Corruption with Modernization in Faulkner’s The Country :: Faulkner Country Short Stories

The Corruption with Modernization in Faulkner’s The Country The disruption of traditional values and ways of life that accompanied the modernization of the U.S. seems to be a common theme throughout the â€Å"Country† section of Faulkner’s Collected Stories. In â€Å"Barn Burning† Abner Snopes seems to feel that the world is against him: â€Å"Don’t you know all they wanted was a chance to get at me†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (8). He sees fire as â€Å"the one weapon for the preservation of integrity† (8), and it is apparent that he feels the disparity in standard of living between farm owners such as Major de Spain, and workers like himself to be an injustice and an injury to him (but then again, maybe he’s just plain evil, as Faulkner’s characterization of him as stiff, cold, and always in dark clothing intimates). In â€Å"Shingles for the Lord,† the â€Å"modern ideas about work† imparted to Solon Quick from his experience with the WPA are presented as ridiculous—labor put toward r epairing a church calculated out precisely into â€Å"work units† (29-30). Could Faulkner be presenting the idea that so-called â€Å"progress† and the introduction of capitalism and government intervention has corrupted people—become the new church at which they worship? In â€Å"The Tall Men,† a sort of Gemeinschaft vs. Gesellschaft theme is evident. I really like this story. It conveys how difficult the changes in the U.S. during the early part of the 20th century must have been for the â€Å"country† people who were tied to the land. New Deal programs like the WPA and AAA, â€Å"three-letter reasons for a man not to work† (58), are a problem for the McCallum’s because the programs made hard work unprofitable and encouraged laziness and dependency as farmers lost autonomy and became beholden to the government. The old marshal, Mr. Gombault, tries to make Mr. Pearson, the government investigator, understand that the McCallum's are â€Å"tall† or prideful men whose self-sufficiency and friendly transactions have not given way to the impersonal deals and something-for-nothing mentality of the new era (it’s interesting that the characterizations of the McCallum's completely contradict Mr. Pearson’s chara cterization of â€Å"these people† as lazy, selfish, and ungrateful or unpatriotic, on page 46). Again in â€Å"A Bear Hunt,† traditional, country people are set apart from â€Å"literate, town-bred people† (65); and in the last two stories, both featuring the Grier family (relation to Res Grier of â€Å"Shingles for the Lord†?

Human Anatomy and Physiology Essay

Abstract On October 1, 2014, a 56 year old man, Mr. Brown, came in for his follow-up appointment to talk about his cholesterol panel. Mr. Brown’s cholesterol levels are not within healthy standards and he needs to change his life style before his health diminishes. Mr. Brown likes to eat and hates to exercise. I am going to show him his cholesterol levels so that he can see what he is doing to his body. If he does not get his cholesterol levels where they need to be his arteries might get so clogged up that he could have a heart attack or stroke. He needs to do some preventive medicine on his own with a little help from me and my staff. Hello Mr. Brown thank you for coming back for your follow up on your test results. My name is Laura Bramlett and I am the Physician Assistant (PA) that will be going over your tests results. First I would like to give you some good news. Your Triglycerides is at 145 mg which is a normal range. Triglycerides are fats, oils, and waxes known as Lipids that are in your body and their functions are energy storage, insulation, and protection. Now your cholesterol on the other hand are in a dangerous bad area. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in the body cells to make hormones, vitamin D and substances that help you digest foods (NIH). Your overall cholesterol level is 210 mg/dl which is border line high and your Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL) and High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) are just as high. Lipoproteins is made up of protein and lipids. In reference to your LDL and your HDL they are out of control and I am here to help you get them under control. Your LDL is 160 mg/dl which is high and we need to get it down to the normal range of 100 – 129 mg and your HDL is 33 mg/dl which is a poor level and needs to be 60mg/dl or higher to be at its best levels. (Mayo) What is LDL and HDL? Mr. Brown LDL is known as bad cholesterol and could lead to a buildup of cholesterols in your arteries if we do not get it under control. HDL is known as good cholesterol and it carries and collects the cholesterol from all over your body and sends it to the liver and the liver will remove the choleste rol from your body. Cholesterol is produced in the liver and small  amounts of it is produced in the small intestine and individual cells and the causes of high cholesterol are as follows: is a person who is a smoker, is obese, has a poor diet with lack of exercise and a possible diabetic. (NIH) Mr. Brown, our records show that you smoke and are obese for your age and height. We need to get your good (HDL) and bad (LDL) cholesterol under control before it is too late and you have a heart attack or stroke. Reducing your high cholesterol is manageable and treatable, we just need you to commit on eating right and healthy so that you can lose some of your weight. I know you do not like to exercise but if you can just walk around the block or walk 30 min a day to start off with it will jump start everything to a better health. There is medication that I can give you however, I would like for you start off exercising and eating right to lower your cholesterol before we resort to medication. One of the medications that I would have you take is called Crestor and it will help lower your LDL or bad cholesterol and increase your HDL or good cholesterol. However, like most medications Crestor does have some side effects. You could experience muscle pain or weakness, feel unusually tired or have a fever, and have  headaches or abdominal pain. Sir, if you have any of these symptoms I need you to come back in so we can see what is going on. Once I give you your medication I still need you to exercise, at least walk, for 15 – 30 min a day. Mr. Brown, it is better for you to exercise and eat right before we add Crestor to your diet. Because of the side effects that the medication gives I believe we should try everything else before adding something that is at risk to you and your health. Mr. Brown I know that you might be unwilling to change your life style but take your family into consideration. If you do not get your health, especially your cholesterol under control you might end up in the emergency room and not only will you be suffering but so will your family. I know that I have said it before but I really need you to consider walking and exercising to get your Cholesterol down before we think about giving you the Crestor. The Gwinnett Medical Hospital, my staff, and I are here for you to help with any concerns or fears you might have to jump start your healthy life style. I assure you that if you start to walk during halftime of your football games or even during your games it will make a difference in your life. Here are some pamphlets I would like for you to read about Cholesterol and what it can do to your body. Focus on small accomplishments first and then we can set up some larger goals and accomplishments. Now if you have any more question or concerns ab out your health, after you leave here, please give us a call immediately.
